Shooting an Elephant

George Orwell

These essays have appeared in the following magazines: New Writing, Horizon, The Adelphi, Now, Polemic, Partisan Review and The Tribune.

Editor’s Note

The first three of these essays were written between 1931 and 1936, the rest between 1945 and 1949. The pieces grouped together under the title "I WRITE AS I PLEASE" are a selection from a weekly column which George Orwell wrote for Tribune. Written under these conditions they cannot be considered in the same category as the other essays and have been included because of their charm and because they express ideas which he has not developed elsewhere.
